EU4ClimateResilience Presented Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Pasture-Based Livestock Farming in Ukraine
On 25 September, EU4ClimateResilience presented the results of its work on assessing climate risks and vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s agricultural sector, with a particular focus on the future impacts of climate change on pasture-based livestock farming.
During the webinar, Liudmyla Palamarchuk, Senior Researcher at the Atmospheric Physics Department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, presented the assessment of projected climate changes and their implications for livestock production.
The presentation explored how rising temperatures and changes in precipitation patterns may affect livestock farming across Ukraine in the coming decades. Particular attention was given to heat stress, prolonged periods of extreme temperatures, droughts, heavy precipitation and other weather-related hazards that can affect animal health and productivity, pasture conditions and the availability of water and feed.
The webinar also highlighted a range of adaptation measures that can help reduce climate-related risks. These include modernising livestock housing and improving protection from heat stress, strengthening water resource management, improving the resilience of feed systems, and restoring and sustainably managing pastures.
The event was part of a series of webinars implemented under the project “Strengthening the Equality and Resilience of Rural Areas through Women-Led Pasture and Livestock Management,” implemented by the NGO Ecoaction. The webinar provided an opportunity to share the results of the EU4ClimateResilience-supported assessment with stakeholders and discuss how climate risk information can inform practical adaptation in Ukraine’s livestock sector.
